Meanings of Sephiroth
Meanings of Sephiroth
(also an explination of Sephiroth's non-evil)
Sephiroth.
Exactly what does this mean?
Perhaps you know this, but 'Sephiroth' is something having to do with the 'Tree of Life', from something that I can't quite remember, is it Judaic or Wiccan? Tell me.
Anyway, this Tree of Life has ten (is it ten?) spheres of being, which are known as Sephiroth. Again, I'm not quite sure, enlighten me of errors.
Anyway, on to some things that may point to Sephiroth's holiness as opposed to his evil...
Now, I've just pointed out to you the religeous meaning of his name. And I don't recall anything in the book I read about the Sephiroth that this has any bad meaning.
There is also the matter of the sword. As all true FFVII fans know, Sephiroth's sword is a Masamune. As any Final Fantasy fan will know, a Masamune is included as a weapon in many Final Fantasy games, and always as a tool of good. I shall point out here that in Final Fantasy Legend III, for GameBoy (one of the stupidest FF games I've ever seen) , the Masamune is a sword you obtain by uncursing the cursed Murasame sword. I quote from the manual of FF Legend III:
'1. Masa, the Weapon Artist
Masa is the most skilled weapon-maker in Pureland. He can turn the cursed 'Muramas' sword into the mighty 'Masmune' sword.'
Note that his name is part of Masamune's!
Masamune is the good, Murasame is the evil.
At this point, I will tell you of a Japanese legend.
There were two master swordsmiths, Masamune and Murasame. Masamune's blades were considered to be lucky and bring peace to the wielder, but Murasame's swords were thought to be unlucky and to bring bloodthirst upon the owner. Eventually it was decided that there would be a contest to see whose swords were better. What they would do was immerse one sword made by each swordsmith into a stream that had leaves floating on it. Leaves went out of thier way to slice themselves on Murasame's sword, but they avoided Masamune's sword. Masamune is a non-violent weapon, perhaps more evident that when he killed Aeris, there was no blood...
And so Sephiroth posesses a good blade, while Cloud, on the other hand, uses the unlucky Murasame at one point in the game, once he gets to Wutai.
There is this interesting matter about Savior Sephiroth at this point. Savior Sephiroth has nice associations, no? Know that Savior, is in fact NOT the boss' real name, but Safer-Sephiroth. This is an adaption of Seraph Sephiroth, an adaption of, obviously Seraphim Sephiroth. I believe that a Seraphim is indeed one of the most powerful kinds of angels from Christian mythology.
Speaking of Seraphim, does Savior Sephiroth not have six wings as lower extremities? The Seraphim have six wings. Note that I ignore the wing that takes the place of Sephiroth's right arm, because this is not the right sort of wing we're talking about here, and is not used for propulsion purposes, but a weapon. Note the halos, and in addition, the name of the famous accompanying song, One-Winged Angel. For more on One-Winged Angel, go to my One-Winged Angel page.
Keep in mind that said song, One-Winged Angel, is sung in the language used buy the Christian Church, Latin. I believe that this is the language the Pope uses?
What's that you say? Sephiroth killed Aeris, so he MUST be evil? I'm sorry, but I have a bit of evidence that suggests that killing Aeris was not Sephiroth's idea.
The next time you fight Bizzaro Sephiroth, take a look at the top of its head. I know, its larger face does in a VERY small way resemble Sephiroth. But focus on the smaller, higher body with the more feminine features and what appear to be anntennae. Concievably, that higher face could be that of Jenova, and the 'anntennae' could be puppet strings! They do seem to move in accordance with Bizzaro Sephiroth's motions, no? Is this Jenova commanding Sephiroth against his will? Could Jenova have siezed control of Sephiroth, forced him to make that fateful plunge in the City of the Ancients towards an innocent flower girl? After all, Sephiroth genuinely thought that he was an Ancient, and would he really want to exterminate the one person who could, ahem, help him propagate his race? Certainly Jenova had an animosity towards the Cetra, they had tried to kill her. But Aeris had done nothing to Sephiroth. Sephiroth had no real reason to kill her, but Jenova did. Consider this.
I have also heard ths tidbit of evidence on my theory, working on the colors of the wing that has replaced Savior Sephiroth's right arm. This person stated that the wing was the colors of the three Jenovas you fight before North Crater, Jenova-BIRTH (a brownish color), Jenova-LIFE (a blue color), and Jenova-DEATH (a red color). This does not apply to Jenova-SYNTHESIS, as in that form she is a pinkish color, as well as violet. Further evidence that Jenova had even taken over Sephiroth's dreams of being a savior to the Cetra? The coloration is right for this. In fact, the feathers on the lower portions of Savior Sephiroth's lower wings are tinted blue and yellow, the colors that Lifeform Hojo was. Lifeform Hojo was a Jenova creature, remember. And Hojo is Seph's father...the plot thickens...
Please keep in mind the fact that this is all my little defence for my favorite character. There is no real basis for all this speculation. I might consider e-mailing the people at SquareSoft about this, but until then, I welcome any more theories you may have about Sephiroth not being so evil after all...
