Why, exactly, is it evil?
What is 'it', you ask? Oh-ho! Well, if you're a Christian, 'it' can be quite a lot. The other day one of my friends told me that my Tarot cards are a tool of Satan. I asked why, and he just said 'Because'. I didn't press the issue because I would like to continue this friendship. And this little point in our conversation led me to wonder, exactly why do the Christians this this or that is 'evil'? Why couldn't these mysterious forces that work in Tarot cards or runes be the work of God and not Satan?
What a concept! And so I immediately set out to create this page.
Is there a reason that people brand devices of divination or another religion or even role-playing games as Satan worship? At what point in time during crystal gazing is Satan worshipped? How did people decide that infernal Powers reside in that beautifully decorated deck of cards? How is it that rolling dice and using the imagination invoking Asmodeus? And so I have decided to question this whole concept.
Obviously the answer would be different as to who I ask. I was showing off my deck of Tarot cards to my grandmother who goes to church every Sunday and she made no protest to my new hobby and did not mention the word Satan, Lucifer, Baal, or Belial whatsoever. And yet, a minister's son and one of my best friends both told me that the cards were a tool of their Adversary. How very perplexing.
Other religions, now, I understand how some unpleasant kinds of Chistians think they are worshipping either Satan or some of Satan's demons. According to many Christians being in any religion other than Christianity will damn you to Hell, and some even say that being a different kind of Christian will condemn you. Read Needful Things by Stephen King so see such a conflict among Christians towards others of their own faith. According to http://www.religioustolerance.com, having a belief such as this would mean that approximately 85% of all humanity is doomed to burn in Hell. I, for one, cannot imagine a God this cruel as to torture this many for being slightly different in faith-related business.
And how do they know that they're practicing the right religion? I recall that I once read a story about a man who had lived as a good Christian all his life, died, and woke up not at the Pearly Gates but in the Islamic Hell. Now, I don't even know if there is an Islamic Hell. But it certainly was a good story.
Back to the subject of imagined 'evil', however.
Sadly, Christianity is not the only religion that condemns things. Anyone who has bothered to read a newspaper or watch the news will remember the atrocities commited by the Taliban, when that group decided that some of the world's largest statues of Buddha were 'evil' and destroyed them. Two beautiful works of art that belonged to the world destroyed by religious idiocy! You can't BELIEVE how ANGRY that makes me! Museums offered to buy the statues and have them transported away from those Taliban ASSHOLES but were refused! Ohhhhhh....I'll have to shut up about this topic now because I'm getting too angry!
Unfortunately, the world is being filled with religious idiots, and it is most distressing to a self-proclaimed heathen such as myself to see that the most powerful nation in the world is under the control of a man who is a COMPLETE idiot and thinks that Canada's Prime Minister is one 'Jean Poutine'...he also is frighteningly Christian, has given Ashcroft hideous power, and promotes the Christian Right. He dosen't know what Wicca IS and when he was told did not consider it a religion. You may think that I laugh at all this because I'm happily living in Canada but it makes me amazingly uneasy knowing that someone like this is the most powerful man in the world. Canada itself narrowly escaped being ruled by a person like Bush, Stockwell Day. Luckily, his campaign was destroyed by people in his own party.
However, America is full of similar people. Pat Robertson comes to mind, although I recently read something on http://www.witchvox.com that made me think...there had been a fuss about military officers stopping Wiccan soldiers from practicing their faith on base or wearing a pentacle. Robertson said on his show that the Wiccans should be allowed to wear their pentacles if Christians are allowed to wear their crosses, ect. How unusual for a man I had previously considered to be among the most evil people in the world.
Why do the Christians think that the pentacle is a Satanic symbol? The pentacle used to be a symbol of Christ's five wounds and the Star of Bethlehem. Sir Gawain of the Round Table had a pentagram on his shield.
