![]() ![]() ![]() The Pentacle
![]() Oh, yes. The pentacle. A symbol beloved by the Wiccans as a symbol of their faith, altered by the Satanists for the same reason, and hated by many Christians because of its association with magic, Wicca, and Satanism.
The humorously sad part about this is that a Christian who thinks that the one-point-up pentacle is a Satanic symbol will probably have no idea of its meaning.
Actually, the pentacle has a long, detailed, and interesting Christian history. It used to be seen as representing the Star of Bethlehem and Christ's five wounds (nails through the wrists and feet, spear wound in the side). It also means the five knightly virtues, which I regrettably do not remember at the moment. Sir Gawaine of the Round Table had a gold pentagram on a red field on his shield.
The famous 'wailing nun', Hildegard von Bingen, saw it differently. She saw it as the five senses (sight, smell, touch, hearing, taste) and the five members of a human being (head, arms, legs) and therefore as representing God. We all have seen that picture of Leonardo da Vinci's with the man with limbs outstreched, right? Think of that.
