![]() The Wiccan Rede is a poem that tells you what to do in certain cituations. Most people see it as telling Wiccans how to act, and it contains a central...commandment, if you will, of the Wiccan faith: An it harm none, do what you will. This may obvously be waived if you're in a situation to avoid harm to someone very important to you, or yourself. As Janet and Stweard Farrar say in their famous book, A Witches' Bible:
All these ethical standards of not harming anybody, and of relying on the Boomerand Effect instead of counter-attacking, may make it sound as though witches were unqualified pacifists. They are not. There are situations in 'ordinary' life when vigorous action is called for with any weapons available. If you come across and old lady being mugged, you do not preach to the mugger - you knock him out if you can. If bomber planes are attacking your city, you try to shoot them down before they can drop their bombs. If you are being raped, you use your knee with all the force you can muster, without worrying about how long the rapist may spend in hospital.
Turning the other cheek is all very well - but even Jesus used force on one occasion, when he drove the money-changers out of the Temple with a scourge of cords. They asked for it, they got it, and they would have responded to nothing else.
The Wiccan Rede
Bide the Wiccan laws ye must
in perfect love an perfect trust.
Live an let live -
fairly take an fairly give.
Cast the Circle thrice about
to keep all evil spirits out.
To bind the spell every time,
let the spell be spake in rhyme.
Soft of eye an light of touch -
speak little, listen much.
Deosil go by the Waxing Moon -
sing an dance the Witches' Rune.
Widdershins go when the Moon doth wane,
an the Werewolf howls by the dread wolvesbane.
When the Lady's Moon is new,
kiss the hand to her times two.
When the Moon rides at her peak,
then your heart's desire seek.
Heed the Northwind's mighty gale -
lock the door an drop the sail.
When the wind comes from the South,
love will kiss thee on the mouth.
When the wind blows from the East,
expect the new an set the feast.
When the West wind blows o'er thee,
departed spirits restless be.
Nine woods in the Cauldron go -
burn them fast an burn them slow.
Elder be ye lady's tree -
burn it not or cursed ye'll be.
When the Wheel begins to turn -
let the Beltane fires burn.
When the Wheel has turned a Yule,
light the Log an let Pan rule.
Heed ye flower, bush, an tree -
by the Lady blessed be.
Where the rippling waters go,
cast a stone an truth ye'll know.
When ye have need,
hearken not to other's greed.
With the fool no season spend,
or be counted as his friend.
Merry ye meet an merry ye part -
bright the cheeks an warm the heart.
Mind the Threefold Law ye should -
three times bad an three times good.
When misfortune is enow,
wear the blue star on thy brow.
True in love ever be,
unless thy lover's false to thee.
Eight words the Wiccan Rede fullfill -
an it harm none, do what ye will.
Words in turquoise are those that are considered particularly revelant.
